Seminar on Mental Health for the Sisters of St. Ann in Cameroon

Bamenda: 17–18 April 2026 | Yaoundé: 25–26 April 2026

The Sisters of St. Ann in Cameroon recently organized a two-session seminar on Mental Health, facilitated by Sr. Dr. Jackie Atabong, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Therese of Buea.

The first session took place on 17–18 April 2026 at the Fountain of Divine Mercy Pilgrimage Centre, Below Foncha Street, Bamenda, while the second session was held on 25–26 April 2026 in Messa-Mendongo, Yaoundé. Together, these sessions brought together all the Sisters of St. Ann serving in Cameroon, divided into two groups to ensure the participation of every sister.

The seminar was organized with the objective of raising awareness about mental health, reducing the stigma often associated with mental and emotional challenges, and equipping participants with practical tools to foster and maintain mental well-being. Through engaging presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions, the participants were invited to deepen their understanding of mental health as an essential aspect of holistic human development and religious life.

Sr. Dr. Jackie Atabong highlighted the importance of recognizing the signs of emotional distress, developing healthy coping mechanisms, nurturing supportive relationships, and seeking help when necessary. She emphasized that mental health is not merely the absence of illness but a state of well-being that enables individuals to live, work, pray, and serve effectively.

The seminar also provided a safe and welcoming environment where participants could reflect on the challenges of contemporary life and ministry while learning strategies for resilience, self-care, stress management, and community support. The discussions encouraged openness, compassion, and a renewed commitment to creating communities where every member feels valued, heard, and supported.

The Sisters expressed their gratitude to Sr. Dr. Jackie Atabong for sharing her expertise and experience, and for helping them appreciate the vital role mental health plays in personal growth, community living, and apostolic service.

This enriching seminar marks another step in the Congregation’s commitment to the integral formation and well-being of its members, enabling them to continue their mission with renewed strength, hope, and joy.

“Mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being, enabling us to live our vocation faithfully and to serve others with compassion and dedication.”
